Laxnes Special – Horse Riding Tour

Enjoy some time getting to know the Icelandic horse in beautiful surroundings only 15 minutes away from Reykjavík. The perfect addition to your Golden Circle Self-Drive tour.

The Icelandic horse is known for its mild temper, sturdy albeit small body and for having an extra gait that riders from around the world get green with jealousy over. A horse riding tour is a great way to enjoy Icelandic nature in a relaxed manner while getting to know these beautiful creatures.

The Laxnes Horse Farm is family-owned and has a great reputation among travelers and locals alike. If you are looking for a easy and affordable way to spend some time with the Icelandic horse you can’t go wrong with this tour.

Finally, whatever you do, never call the Icelandic horse a pony. At least not when there are locals around.

More information about this tour

If you ask for pick up you will be collected at your accommodation in Reykjavík and driven to the beautiful Mofellsdalur valley to the horse farm. There you will get suited up according to the weather and you’ll get all the necessary safety gear like helmets and such. You will also be asked about your experience and the staff will choose a horse for you based on this information so make sure you are truthful, especially if you are complete beginner.

After the tour you will get a chance to get some light refreshments (you can also buy some soup and bread) before you will be taken back to your hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.

Good to keep in mind

If you are a very experienced rider this tour might be a bit slow for you. It’s designed for all experience levels but if the conditions allow for it you will get a chance to go a bit faster on the way back when the group is divided into separate groups based on experience level and speed the riders are comfortable with. If you are a beginner, on the other hand, and not as confident you can stick with the slower group.

The main object of this tour is the riding and because the guides are busy making sure everyone is safe, and the group sizes vary, it may not be possible for them to explain in great lengths what you are actually seeing around you. We suggest you just use this time to bond with the horse and enjoy the ride and your surroundings without getting too much into what things are called.

Some of the gaits that you might encounter during the ride are a bit bumpy so if you are a woman that has been blessed with a generous bosom you might want to consider wearing a sports bra or something that gives good support. It’s not necessary but you will probably thank us if you do.

Finally, we would suggest if you drive to the farm yourself to check out Gljúfrasteinn Museum which is just next door to the farm. It was the home of Halldór Laxness, the only Icelandic author to ever win the Nobel Prize for literature, and it’s a must visit for any of his fans.

*Please note that if you have a rental car you can also drive to the horse farm yourself but you need to be there at least 20 minutes before the start of the tour. The location of the farm is on the way to Þingvellir National Park which makes this tour a great addition to your Golden Circle self-drive tour.
