Landmannalaugar Hiking Tour

Visit one of the pearls of the Icelandic highlands on a day tour from Reykjavík. A day full of hiking, colorful mountains and a soak in a natural hot pool

This tour is perfect for those who would like to add a bit of hiking to their Iceland itinerary and want to see more of the country than just the Golden Circle. Expect otherworldly landscapes, beautiful colors and a great hike.

About this tour

The tour starts at your preferred pick up location in Reykjavík, Selfoss, or Hella. The drive, which passes through part of the scenic south coast of Iceland, will take you to the southern part of the highlands of Iceland. There you will stop at Landmannalaugar, a true gem in the vast and uninhabited highlands of Iceland. The place, named after its hot springs (Icelandic: laugar), is very geothermally active which means you can see hot steam rising from the ground in multiple places, cross a lava field and that the mountains are incredibly colorful.

When you arrive in this magical destination you will start a 3-4 hour hiking tour, covering 8-10 km on foot, in the beautiful volcanic landscape. On the hike you will cross the Laugahraun lava field, go through the Vondugil canyon and up to the multicolored Mt. Brennisteinsalda. On the way down you will go through another canyon, Grænagil, which is named after the dominant green color of rhyolite in the area. If time allows, you will also summit the Bláhnúkur Volcano.

Last but not least, you will get the chance to soak in the natural hot pool, which should be very welcome after a day of hiking, before you leave these unique and breathtaking surroundings.

“Landmannalaugar with this partner”

I took the super jeep tour to Landmannalaugar with this partner. Here are my thoughts: Landmannalaugar: Easily the most amazing place in Iceland. Words cannot describe. Please, GO THERE. Also, given the harsh conditions in the winter, only super jeeps can get in (in the summer I think you can go in larger busses). The colors of the mountains in contrast with the snow where out of this world. Landmannalaugar is truely NATURE PORN. This partner: Super profesional. We had a great driver. Very informative, great driving skills. He was conscious of our safety and attentive. It was amongst the best things I did in Iceland, and I WILL (not would but will) do it again before I kick the bucket. Jose

“Day trip to Landmannalaugar”

My brother and I did a day trip to Landmannalaugar last week and we both thoroughly enjoy it. The day was well organized and the guides (Inka and Sidney) were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly! Definitely would recommend this tour for a relatively easy hike!

“With this partner to Landmannalaugar”

travelling to Iceland and not visiting landmannalaugar is out of the question. So we booked from home for our group of nine persons with this partner. Our trip to Landmannalaugar with the partner turned out to be unforgettable. We got from our driver lots of history and information about Iceland. He also made stops on beautifull spots on the way to Landmannalaugar. At Landmannalaugar we could make a walk. After that we had to return driving through the mountains but taking another track which was nevertheless as breathtaking as the one we came on in the morning. a real sensation!

“Long day tour at Landmannalaugar (Brennisteinsalda volcano)”

If you are not prepared for a 4+ hour drive to reach this place, then this might be a bit annoying for you. But the drive is definitely worth it, this place is amazing. Just look up some pictures. Our guide was Norris, he was helpful and experienced. When climbing up at the steepest part of the trail upward, he talked with us in Hungarian. This was such a good surprise that I even forgot to worry about the difficulty I was going through while climbing upwards. Hiking boots are necessary, and I would definitely recommend some trekking poles because there are some steep parts when climbing up and down as well. It can be done without it, but there were some parts when my girlfriend, who has some fear of heights, would have benefited from a supporting pole. Make sure you a rested before the tour to have a chance to enjoy the afternoon when the actual hike takes place. We used a different bus to get back to Reykjavík, and I could not sit next to my girlfriend which bothered me a bit, but we were almost the last to get on, so with the full bus we occupied the seats we found. If you can, bring a neck pillow for the way back because you will be probably tired and this is a long drive.

“Day Hike to Landmannalaugar”

Brilliant day had on this tour. Both tour guides were informative and sound. Our day tour guide was Inga and she was great. The hike wasn't too strenuous but unless you have proper gear renting boots and waterproofs is required. It was raining and snowing and the luminous orange overalls I got were more than handy. We also got to bathe in the natural hotspring at the base camp which was handy after the hike! The journey from Reykjavik is about 3.5 hours each way so if I was to go again I would do the multi day tour but for a day trip it is still worth the travelling times as most of it is through the highlands!

“What an awesome day”

We had booked the tour to Hekla and Landmannalaugar for the 14th September. Beggi, our fantastic guide picked us up from our hotel in his awesome Superjeep. We had an absolutely fantastic day. Beggi took us to places nobody could reach with a normal 4x4 vehicle. He had such a fantastic knowledge about the region. Despite the weather not being too friendly we hugely enjoyed that day. A big thank you to Beggi and this partner for this unforgettable experience.
