About

About this tour

The tour starts at your preferred pick up location in Reykjavik. The drive, which passes through part of the scenic south coast of Iceland, will take you to the southern part of the highlands of Iceland. There you will stop at Landmannalaugar, a true gem in the vast and uninhabited highlands of Iceland. The place, named after it’s hot springs (Icelandic: laugar), is very geothermally active which means you can see hot steam rising from the ground in multiple places, cross a lava field and the mountains are incredibly colorful.

When you arrive in this magical destination you will start an approximately 4 hour hiking tour, covering up to 10 km on foot, in the beautiful volcanic landscape. On the hike you will cross the Laugahraun lava field, go through the Vondugil canyon and up to the multicolored Mt. Brennistaeinsalda. On the way down you will go through another canyon, Grænagil, which is named after the dominant green color of rhyolite in the area. If time allows, you will also summit the Bláhnúkur Volcano.

Last but not least, you will get the chance to soak in the natural hot pool, which should be very welcome after a day of hiking, before you leave these unique and breathtaking surroundings.

“Day trip to Landmannalaugar”

My brother and I did a day trip to Landmannalaugar last week and we both thoroughly enjoy it. The day was well organized and the guides (Inka and Sidney) were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly! Definitely would recommend this tour for a relatively easy hike!

“Long day tour at Landmannalaugar (Brennisteinsalda volcano)”

If you are not prepared for a 4+ hour drive to reach this place, then this might be a bit annoying for you. But the drive is definitely worth it, this place is amazing. Just look up some pictures. Our guide was Norris, he was helpful and experienced. When climbing up at the steepest part of the trail upward, he talked with us in Hungarian. This was such a good surprise that I even forgot to worry about the difficulty I was going through while climbing upwards. Hiking boots are necessary, and I would definitely recommend some trekking poles because there are some steep parts when climbing up and down as well. It can be done without it, but there were some parts when my girlfriend, who has some fear of heights, would have benefited from a supporting pole. Make sure you a rested before the tour to have a chance to enjoy the afternoon when the actual hike takes place. We used a different bus to get back to Reykjavík, and I could not sit next to my girlfriend which bothered me a bit, but we were almost the last to get on, so with the full bus we occupied the seats we found. If you can, bring a neck pillow for the way back because you will be probably tired and this is a long drive.

“Day Hike to Landmannalaugar”

Brilliant day had on this tour. Both tour guides were informative and sound. Our day tour guide was Inga and she was great. The hike wasn't too strenuous but unless you have proper gear renting boots and waterproofs is required. It was raining and snowing and the luminous orange overalls I got were more than handy. We also got to bathe in the natural hotspring at the base camp which was handy after the hike! The journey from Reykjavik is about 3.5 hours each way so if I was to go again I would do the multi day tour but for a day trip it is still worth the travelling times as most of it is through the highlands!
