Hot Spring Riding Tour

This tour combines two favorite part times in Iceland: riding a horse and bathing in a natural hot spring. Sounds pretty good, right? As a plus, you get some stunning views on your way to and from the hot springs.

You will ride the popular Reykjadalur hiking trail on an Icelandic horse and bathe in a wonderful, natural hot stream, located in th mountains right behind the town of Hveragerði.

The area is geothermal, with abundance of hot springs, which the locals of Hveragerði use to heat up their greenhouses to grow some fruits and veggies. You however, will just use the hot springs for relaxation and entertainment purposes.

About this tour

You will be picked up in Reykjavík and then you drive over the Hellisheiði mountain road to the southern part of Iceland. You’ll arrive at the stables after around 40 minutes’ drive. The pickup is optional, so if it fits your plan better you can meet the tour on location.

You start by putting on the necessary gear, including a helmet and boots provided by the tour operator and getting acquainted to your horse. Then the riding tour begins, on a mountain path leading up to the valley Reykjadalur (Smoke Valley). The name of the valley is quite literal in Icelandic, since there is a lot of hot springs and steam coming from the ground in this geothermal area. Not only will you be able to witness all this geothermal activity up close but you will have a panoramic view of the surrounding area, since the Reykjadalur valley is located up in a mountain.

In the valley you will find the hot stream, perfect to bathe in. What a great way to relax right in the middle of the Icelandic nature. When you have soaked in the stream you will ride back down the hill, enjoying the view and when the weather conditions are good, you might even see the Westman Islands. When you reach home base, you will be offered homemade soup and bread, before you return to Reykjavík.

The total duration of the tour, with pickup, is 8-9 hours, and the riding time will be about 4-5 hours. Riding skills: beginners and experienced riders.

Good to know

You don’t have to worry about safety helmets and such, since you will get the necessary safety gear on location a long with some outerwear and boots.

The weather is always a factor for outdoor activities in Iceland, so keep that in mind when you chose your outfit so you will not be too cold on the tour.

Don’t forget the swimsuit and a towel, so that you can bathe in the hot spring!

“Highlight of our trip!”

We took the Hot springs tour - such a great day! Lots of great tölt. Im an expreienced rider and got exactly the horse i wanted, a happy horse named Kvistur who was the fastest of them all. Everyone had a great day even the guys who had the first ride of their lives. A small family-run company who afterwards invited us for soup in their home. HIGHLY Recommended! Only dissappointment was we got picked up after we got down from the mountain with the springs, i thougt we were going to ride all the way back aswell. Other than that - fantastic!

“Amazing experience!”

I booked the tour to the hot springs and got picked up and my hostel in Reykjavik. When I arrived at hostel I met my guide for the day - Birte. They picked out a horse for me based on my experience, I got Glem. Personally I think they picked out the perfect horse for me. I got rainclothes and everything and off we went! Since I was the only guest for that tour that day me and Birte went up there all alone. She was super nice, funny and we got along very well! I can only recommend Birte to ANYONE. I went bathing in the Hot Springs and we ate some lunch, which was packed for us. The way back went through some nice landscape, it was a nice adventure! Birte fullfilled all my wishes like a magical genie, she's the best! When we got back we got some nice warm soup and bread and then I got dropped of at the cruise terminal, where I joined a cruise ship. Would recommend to everyone!
