Glacier Walk in Sólheimajökull

Glaciers are cool (see what we did there?) and walking on one is a beautiful and awe-inspiring experience.
This tour is a great addition to a self-drive tour around the south coast.

One of the great things about traveling around Iceland is the easy access to all our magnificent glaciers. Because you should never walk on a glacier on your own, it can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing, the best  way to do it is a glacier walking tour and what better tour to do than the most popular one in Iceland. In case you’re confused we’re talking about this tour,  the Glacier Walk in Sólheimajökull.

Please note that this tour does not include a transfer from Reykjavík so it is ideal for those traveling around the South Coast with their own rental car. If you want to do this tour with a transfer from Reykjavík, check out the Take a walk on the ice side tour.

More information

This is a fun and safe way to get to know an Icelandic glacier first hand but the walk is marked  moderate. We here at I Heart Reykjavík are not in the best physical shape but we didn’t just survive this tour, we loved it! The 70 year old lady in our group loved it too. So did the folks that basically ran up the glacier.

The guides will teach you all you need to know about using crampons and ice axes which is essential gear when walking on glaciers. They will also tell you more about the glaciers, their impact on Icelandic nature and how they are being affected by the change of the climate. You can expect to see some ice sculptures (natural of course), water cauldrons and deep crevasses along along with the glacier’s beautiful surroundings.

The guides on this tour are all trained and certified glacier guides that take your safety seriously.

What to wear

This is an outdoor activity, in winter (in Iceland), so we recommend you dress warmly. Hiking shoes are recommended but if you can’t pack yours for some reason you can rent them from the guides (1500 ISK per person, advanced booking recommended to assure availability). Rain coats can be rented also if needed but since you’re pretty smart and you’ve done your research you are probably wearing your own waterproof gear already. No jeans and flip flops please!

Meeting point

The meeting point is the parking area in front of Sólheimajökull (Café Sólheimajökull – see map) 15 minutes before departure. To get there from Reykjavík drive east on the ring road, road number 1, and about 6 km past Skógafoss waterfall you will turn left towards the glacier. It’s marked well and you shouldn’t miss it.

  • Cancellation received more than 24 hours prior to departure are fully refunded.
  • Cancellation received less than 24 hours prior to departure will be charged full price.

Comments from previous guests

“If you're on the fence about this, BOOK IT!”

We booked the glacier walk from Sólheimajökull with Icelandic Mountain Guides and had an incredible time. We had a rental car and met up with our guide as explained on the website. Our group was made up of 7 people, which was a really nice size. Our guide, Þorsteinn, helped us with gear and provided an overview of what we would be doing. A few comments about gear, you will be wearing crampons and therefore having a true hiking boot is necessary (they have gear if needed). The day we went, it was very windy but I was comfortable in nylon pants, a long sleeved shirt, a sweatshirt, a windbreaker, gloves, and a hat. During the walk, Þorsteinn explained about glaciers and answered our group's questions. He kept a nice pace while we were on the glacier, providing opportunities to take pictures as we saw interesting features. It was definitely a memorable experience!

“Glacier Walk....highly recommended!!!”

First time glacier walk, our guide was fantastic, really upbeat and encouraged everyone in the group (about 8 in total) to get talking to each other, which worked!!!! The walk was straightforward and is a great way to learn how to walk on ice and experience the glaciers first hand. About 3 hours on the ice walking through various sections and there were lots of opportunities to ask questions and take lots of pictures....Highly recommended!!!

“Sólheimajökull Glacier Walk”

We had a great experience on this guided walk. Our guide Chris was excellent and very knowledgeable. He gave us a lot of information and answered all our questions. The glacier itself was very beautiful. We went on the first tour of the day so we practically had the whole glacier to ourselves. It is startling to see how much the glaciers are receding so if you have a chance to see one or even better do a hike or climb, you should.
