December 12th – Giljagaur

I hope you survived your first encounter with the Yule Lads because it’s time to get to know brother number two who arrives tonight. Say hello to Giljagaur.

Giljagaur or Gully Gawk, like his brother Stekkjastaur, was a big fan of milk. According to a poem by Jóhannes úr Kötlum, which is the main source for information about the Yule Lads, he had a grey head and sneaked around some gullies before making a run for it into the cowshed at the first opportunity. There he would wait for the milkmaid to make her advances on the stable boy (saucy) so he could steal some milk (naughty) which he would drink while still warm. His favorite thing, in case you were wondering, was the froth.

I think if Stekkjastaur and Giljagaur would have worked together they would have been much more successful. Stekkjastaur could for example, chatted up the milkmaid, giving Giljagaur enough time to get enough milk for both of them.  Teamwork, boys, teamwork!
