A mini Reykjavík makeover with Sjoppan Hair Salon

One of the things I sometimes daydream about is going away from Iceland for a while and return as a different person. The change could be in the form of a better physique after a 3 month intense bootcamp in Bangkok (I seriously considered this for a while) or just a new and amazing wardrobe after a wild shopping spree in NYC. It’s not that I’m so disappointed with myself that I want to flee the country on some Extreme Makeover endeavors, I just love the freedom that comes with travelling and how it leaves you with this idea that anything is possible. Like changing the color of your hair.

Earlier this fall I got a rare opportunity to be a part of someone’s on the road transformation.  Berenika, a World Wide Friends volunteer from Poland, had just decided to not go back to Poland after her designated time in Iceland when she stumbled up on a post from me on the Reykjavík couchsurfing group looking for a hair model.

The reason I was looking for a hair model was the fact that I had noted in my stats that a lot of people were looking for information about good hairdressers in Reykjavík and I thought I should answer the call with suggestions. So I contacted Sjoppan Hairsalon, a nice joint in the heart of Downtown Reykjavík, and asked them if I could come and make a time laps video with the Craigster of someone getting their hair cut. They more than happily obliged and the video above was the end result.

Now, there are several reasons for why I like Sjoppan. First of all, the atmosphere of the place is more like you are visiting your cool friend’s basement den than walking into a professional hair salon. This is mainly due to the laid back attitude the Sjoppan crew has. You arrive, help yourself to a bottle of  coke  and then sit down and relax with their awesome Super Nintendo, where I indecently kicked Craig’s ass at Super Mario Bros.

Despite their loose flair, they take their work seriously and make sure their customers walk out the door with a smile. Tinna, who was responsible for Berenika’s transformation, took her time discussing what she thought would be good for her and took on board her input and concerns. Berenika was super happy with the service and more importantly in love with her new look.

If Super Mario All Stars is not your thing they also offer more intellectual entertainment

Because Sjoppan is still fairly new and fresh, and because they have long opening hours, it’s not impossible to get an appointment on short notice. Of course contacting them in advance is always advised though – which you can do by calling them on +354 – 511 -1221 . They are located in Bankastræti 14, above Pizza Pronto and close to the 66°North and Cintamani stores.
