About this tour
The tour starts with a pick-up from your hotel and guesthouse and from there you leave on a small bus towards Sólheimahjökull glacier in the south of Iceland. Number of guests are limited per guide for your safety and comfort. After you glide over the glacier like pro with the provided crampons and an ice ax you will be transported to the magnificent Skógarfoss waterfall where you get to take in the amazing views.
From there you will go with your new found friends (small buses = nice folks to chat with) to a charming restaurant where you get a traditional Icelandic dinner and a yummy dessert. After dinner your hunt for the northern lights begins but because the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and can’t be turned on by request so sightings are not guaranteed. You will also stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall and enjoy its lid up glory in the dark. Happy hunting!
The guides on this tour are all trained and certified glacier guides.
Even though you get dinner on this tour you might want to bring some snacks with you to eat on the way. You will also get a chance to buy some snacks on the way.
Please note that if you have any special dietary restrictions you might not find what you need where the tour stops so you might want to think about bringing a packed lunch with you.
If you are on a tight budget, bringing your own lunch is advised
What to wear
This is an outdoor activity, in winter (in Iceland), so we recommend you dress warmly. Hiking shoes are recommended but if you can’t pack yours for some reason you can rent them from the guides (1500 ISK per person, advanced booking recommended to assure availability). Rain coats can be rented also if needed but since you’re pretty smart and you’ve done your research you are probably wearing your own waterproof gear already. No jeans and flip flops please!
- Cancellation received more than 24 hours prior to departure are fully refunded.
- Cancellation received less than 24 hours prior to departure will be charged full price.
All complaints must reach the partner within 5 days from departure from Iceland. Otherwise, possible compensation is not valid.

“Glacier hike and northern lights”
Willi was our guide and he was tremendous! There were four of us on this excursion myself (54), my son (14) and a mother and daughter (both grown). The weather was windy, cold and wet but the trip was wonderful. Between the gear we all brought and what the guide provided we were pretty well equipped for the weather. Wonderful hike up the glacier and back, and a fantastic dinner of hot soup and bread at Country Hotel Anna. The weather still wasn't cooperating as we drove and searched for some clear skies and a view of the northern lights. Willi was cheerful and persistent and we did get a brief glimpse of the gorgeous northern lights!
“Glacier walk and Northern lights”
I got lucky as our tour guide was Vidar. And he made our day and made me fall in love with Iceland. He enjoyed telling our group interesting facts about the places we've visited, had a great sense of humour and added a few additional stops to our tour to make it more interesting. I have some great memories from this tour and they still inspire me now that i am back to my normal life. Thank you Vidar:)
“Glacier walk and Northern Lights”
We recently went on a glacier walk and northern lights tour with Icelandic Mountain Guides (Feb. 2015). Our guide, Thorsten, was fantastic and the tour itself was exceptional. We saw beautiful waterfalls, hiked for a couple hours on the glacier, ate a wonderful dinner at Hotel Anna, and even saw the Northern Lights - all during less than ideal weather conditions. It was February, after all. Throughout the entire day, Thorsten was patient, informative, funny, helpful, and most importantly safety oriented.
I can't wait to go back to Iceland in the summer sometime and will absolutely book with Icelandic Mountain Guides again.
