Last summer I took on the ambitious and exciting task to visit every single bar in the Reykjavík Downtown area. What was more, I invited anyone and everyone to join my quest through my Facebook page, free of charge, which resulted in some epic adventures with new friends and old. However, quite regretfully and despite my best intentions, I failed miserably at completing this task. In fact, I gave up after less than 20 (of the 70+ bars I planned to visit).
I have lots of excuses for why this didn’t work out: I was really really busy, I get hungover just opening a beer and going to bars to not drink seem redundant and I was really really busy. Damn it, I used that already.
In all reality I don’t know what happened. I started this project and then all of a sudden the year was over and then I blinked and it was April already. Time flies when you’re having fun, they say.
What I learned from this experiment is that Reykjavík has A LOT of bars. My previous statements of it being useless to cover bars on this blog were also confirmed because three of the bars we visited last summer have already closed down or changed their names. Not to mention all the bars that have been added to the list since then.
The reason for this post is a list I compiled on Foursquare when getting ready for this experiment with all the bars in downtown Reykjavík listed on Foursquare. I spent a lot of time on it and it’s a shame to let it go to waste. Maybe my fellow Foursquare users can help you make a decision which ones to visit.
Also, if you plan to explore the Reykjavík bar scene you should definitely check out the Appy Hour app, available both for Iphone and Android.
